Ortho-Bionomy? What Is It?

Ortho-Bionomy® is a very effective bodywork therapy and energy healing system. Ortho-Bionomy can quickly reduce pain and restore a more functional relationship between muscles, bones and joints with specific body positions. It can promote a more balanced relationship of body, mind and spirit by engaging our natural self healing processes.
Ortho-Bionomy was developed by a British trained Osteopath, named Arthur Lincoln Pauls, in the 1970’s after being exposed to an article by
Lawrence Jones, DO, the founder of Positional Release Therapy. The 1964 article was entitled “Spontaneous Release By Positioning.” Dr. Pauls added his own unique elements including his knowledge of judo and an emphasis on using energy techniques to achieve the same results.

Pauls chose the word “Ortho-Bionomy” for his variation on positional release. The word “Ortho” or straight, “bio” or life, and “nomy” which means the principles or laws governing. Together it meant “the correct application of the natural laws of life.” In 1976 Dr. Pauls began to teach Ortho-Bionomy to students in the USA.
He choose the SandDollar as his logo/symbol for Ortho-Bionomy.
Ortho-Bionomy uses the most comfortable body position possible to reset the sensors in the musculature and joints known collectively as the proprioceptors. This process helps to reduce pain and suffering.

Ortho-Bionomy has a unique perspective that expands the use of positioning. Dr. Pauls believed that we had an innate intelligence that knew how to self-correct.

Finding the best position for release was not just about the pressure and distortion of the proprioceptors, but depended on the intention of the practitioner to encounter (and be in relationship with) our natural self-healing. Dr. Pauls also developed Ortho-Bionomy energy techniques to access more subtle levels of healing. Ortho-Bionomy addresses a remarkable number of painful and debilitating physical conditions such as headache, back pain, sprains/strains, sports injuries, acute injuries, restricted movement, knee problems, acute and chronic pain, neuromuscular dysfunction. It can have a profound impact on physical, emotional and spiritual trauma.
This holistic perspective takes into account the client’s complete experience of pain and suffering and the means of resolving it. In Ortho-Bionomy the client is empowered to take control of his or her own healing. Ortho-Bionomy was developed over 30 years ago by Arthur Lincoln Pauls, DO. Dr. Pauls combined the structural principles from Osteopathy with energetic and philosophical concepts from the Martial Arts and
Homeopathy to create Ortho-Bionomy.
Dr. Pauls described how Ortho-Bionomy works this way: “Injury or disease result from what I call ‘misunderstanding’. Ortho-Bionomy brings  understanding to the person, so that he or she may respond appropriately, rather than by habit or fear.”
An Ortho-Bionomy session is a respectful and comfortable “hands-on” experience. The gentle techniques used activate self-corrective nerve reflexes, allowing the body to regain its original patterns of health and wellness.
Physical and emotional healing occur as the body remembers its natural ability to seek balance by moving from pain to comfort.
Ortho-Bionomy is successfully used to help people with a variety of health complaints including acute injuries such as whiplash; chronic conditions like headaches, back pain and stress; problems associated with postural and structural imbalances, and emotional issues.
